Gabrielle Chanel pushed for practical designs in her clothing, especially clothing for women. She introduced pants to women’s fashion, and pioneered the use of comfortable jersey wool. She died in Switzerland in 1971, but the story of her life and her career as a fashion designer has been made into a Broadway musical, several films and a number of stage plays. In 1999, Gabrielle Chanel earned the distinction of being the only fashion designer named as one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People of the 20th Century.
